Manny Pacquiao answers to Floyd Mayweather Jr Twitter challenge to fight him on May 5, 2012

Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao answered back to the Twitter challenge of his most controversial nemesis, Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight him on May 5, 2012.

According to ABS-CBN News on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, Pacquiao said that it is up to Mayweather Jr. to decide if their much-awaited boxing bout will push through, not him.

“Wala ng problema doon. Tanggapin na lang n’ya ang 50% na share n’ya at okay na ‘yung fight,” Pacquiao, who turned 33 last December 17, told the report, with each of them being estimated to make around $50 million to $60 million.

(There are no more problems. Once he accepts the 50% share, then the fight deal is done)

“S’ya na dapat ang mag-oo… Priority ng Top Rank, namin, na matuloy ang laban na ‘yun dahil ‘yun ang hinihintay mga tao.” Pacquiao added, who was recently promoted as Lieutenant Colonel in the Reserve Force of the Philippine Army.

(He is the one to say yes… The priority of Top Rank is that the fight should push through since it has long been waited by the people)

On Tuesday, Floyd Mayweather Jr., who was given a 90-day sentence and a 100-day community service last December 21 for a battery case, challenged Manny Pacquiao via Twitter.

“Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see.” Mayweather Jr (@FloydMayweather) tweeted.

“My Jail Sentence was pushed back because the date was locked in. Step up Punk.” The 34-year old American boxer tweeted, about two hours later, as he is set to be behind bars starting June 1, 2012.

Meanwhile, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday that a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout on May 5 is unlikely to happen, citing a later date is more possible.

“You don’t throw $40 million away. May 5 is out, that’s impossible. June 9 is perfect.” Arum told the paper, noting the extra time is needed for the construction of an arena much bigger than the 16,000-seat MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Last December, Jose Manalo‘s impersonation of “Budoy”–a character of ABS-CBN’s primetime series played by Gerald Anderson–became a trending topic on Twitter.

During the Fastbreak Charity Event for Sendong Victims held at The Arena in San Juan City last Friday, comedian Jose Manalo was able to meet the object of his impersonation–Gerald Anderson.
During the halftime break, Jose and Gerald put on a show to the delight of the crowd.

Aside from their entertaining “Budoy” skit, Jose and Gerald also showed their basketball skills when each of them sank a three-pointer during the game.

‘It’s More Fun in the Philippines’ – DOT’s New Campaign Became a Trending Topic on Twitter and Facebook Worldwide

“It’s More Fun in the Philippines” – this is the new slogan launched by the Department of Tourism today, January 6, which became a trending topic on Twitter worldwide.

The new slogan as well as the official website of the campaign–www.itsmorefuninthephilippines.com–was launched earlier today by the Department of Tourism (DOT) hoping for the full support of the Filipinos for it to stay true.

The pitch, which was conceived with the help of top advertising agency BBDO Guerrero | Proximity Philippines, gives weight to the people of the Philippines and not just on its captivating tourist spots as its official website says: “It’s the Filipinos that will make your holiday unforgettable.”

“Our strategy is simple: while other countries invite you to observe, Filipinos can promise a more heartfelt and interesting experience.” Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. said regarding the new campaign.

Jimenez also twitted on the DOT’s (@DOTPhilippines) official Twitter account:

“We need a line that is easily understood. Competitive. More fun in the Philippines is true. Keri natin ito!”

Aside from the DOT Secretary, Filipino netizens here and abroad also discussed the new slogan on Twitter which made the hashtag #ItsMoreFunInThePhilippines a trending topic on the microblogging site worldwide.

It became a viral meme that even other nationalities joined in on the discussion.

English author Neil Gaiman, for example, posted on his Twitter account:

“#itsmorefuninthephilippines hashtag is a true one. They applaud loudly and hug you a lot.”

So what do you think of the DOT’s new campaign? Pasado kaya kay President Noynoy?
It can be remembered that PNoy junked the previous DOT slogan–“Pilipinas Kay Ganda”–in 2010 after it was alleged that the logo was copied from Poland‘s official travel website.

Miriam Santiago Wins Judge Position in International Criminal Court (ICC)

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago has been elected judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC), according to the Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

Santiago unanimously won the highly powerful seat in the elections held last Monday, December 12, in New York City. She was reportedly the first to be elected out of 18 candidates vying for six seats on the ICC, garnering 79 nods out of 104 valid votes.

The stint makes Santiago the first woman from an Asian developing state to join as a judge in the Netherlands-based international court that tries persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern.

DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario considers Santiago’s election a “day of pride” for the country.

“We are pleased that the international community has listened to us. Indeed, it is a new day for the Philippines, a day of pride for our country and a day of honor, knowing that this is a tremendous responsibility and mandate placed upon our compatriot,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senator Santiago shared via an interview that she would resign as senator before she take her oath in March next year.

“I’ll have to resign [as senator]. Isn’t that good news for my enemies? I would have to live in The Hague. I will look like a European and speak like a European and I will be as snooty as a European when I come back,” she said.

CNN named it’s 2011 Hero of the Year and she’s none other than Fil-Am midwife Robin Lim!

Filipino-American midwife Robin Lim was named the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year during the awarding ceremony held Sunday evening at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

54-year-old Lim, born to a Filipino mother and an American father and was raised in the Philippines, bested 9 other finalists from around the world.

According to CNN, Lim, whose mother is a Filipino-Chinese, put up “birthing sanctuaries” for Indonesians in need of maternal and general health care.

In her “Meet the Hero” interview, Lim said it is common in Indonesia to hold babies in the hospital until the bills have been paid.

Lim said mothers should only worry about delivering their babies safely and not about how they should pay the hospital where they gave birth.

Lim brought home $250,000 for being named the 5th CNN Hero of the Year in addition to the $50,000 that she received after making it to the Top 10.

In 2009, Filipino Efren Peñaflorida was named CNN Hero of the Year for his Kariton classroom project, which brought the classrooms to children in the streets.

Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao was officially promoted as Lieutenant Colonel in the Reserve Force of the Philippine Army.

As noted at ABS-CBN News on Monday, December 05, 2011, world boxing champion and Sarangani Congressman Representative Manny Pacquiao has now an official rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

According to reports, Lt Col. Manny Pacquiao, who won against Juan Manuel Marquez via a controversial majority decision last month, was awarded at Fort Bonifacio that morning.

Philippine Army Commanding General Major Gen. Emmanuel Bautista and Brigadier General Alex Albano formally gave Pacquiao a shoulder board bearing the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

“I want to take my role and responsibility to higher ground, to compensate for the discomfort I probably caused the Philippine Army family when some personalities questioned my commissionship as lieutenant colonel,” Manny Pacquiao was quoted in his acceptance speech.

“Obviously, I am not trained for military operations, but it should be emphasized that reservists, by their true nature, are civilian provisional first and military personnel second,” He added, who also became the executive officer of the Sarangani 1st Early Reserve Battalion.

Lt. Col. Manny Pacquiao earned his rank effective last September 21 and his papers were signed by Executive Secretary Pacquito Ochoa on the authority of President Benigno Aquino III (PNoy), who is also the Commander in chief of the military.

Apparently, the decision of Malacanang to promote Pacquiao was highly criticized by some groups and individuals, noting that he did not finish college, which is one of the qualifications for that rank.

However, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda stressed out that Pacquiao was entitled to his rank being an elected Congressman and has brought honor to the country.

Pacquiao, 32, was enlisted in the Reserve Force of the Philippine Army as Sergeant on April 27, 2006 and was promoted to the rank of Technical Sergeant before that year ended.

On October 7, 2007, he was promoted to Master Sergeant and was elevated to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant on May 4, 2009, with the boxer noting that he never asked to be promoted.

Filipino, Everlito Villacruz, Won Top Prize in the Red Bull Art of Can Competition in Kuwait

Filipino Everlito Villacruz’s “Scorpion” has won the top prize at the “Red Bull Art of Can Competition” in Kuwait. There were 120 entries and 63 made it to the exhibit, as disclosed by news sites, December 5, 2011.

Ever, as Villacruz is known to friends, used several red bull cans to come up with his intricate and ingenious design for the” Scorpion.”

Villacruz works as an interior designer and Project Design Coordinator for the Warba group in Kuwait. He also writes for several online sites and for his blog “Pamatay Homesik” for which he is popularly known online. Incidentally, his blog is a finalist in the 2011 Philippine Blog Awards in the Filipiniana category.

He is also into photography, painting, and poetry. He says:

“Maliban sa pagpipinta, kinagigiliwan ko rin malaman ang tradisyon, lugar at, ang iba’t ibang kulturang aking ginagalawan…”

(Aside from painting, I am fond of learning about the tradition and culture of the different places that I circulate in.)

It is not the first time that Villacruz’s work of art has been recognized; he and 4 other OFW organized an art group named Adhika, which was featured previously in ABS-CBN Global and GMA News, two of the leading Filipino TV stations.

Miss USA Nicole Lynn also known as Nicole Kelly, candidate of Miss Earth Pageant 2011 allegedly posted on her Facebook wall a not-so-good comment about the Philippines which is now creating a big buzz over the internet.

“I hardly made it to Manila and we already attended a ridiculous tv show. So annoying!!! These people want to touch you and be with you all the time!! I can’t understand a word they say. I can’t wait to go back home. This country is so dirty and noisy. I’m scared to eat!!! What a mess. On a lighter note I don’t see any real competition. Will keep you updated my loves,” Nicole Lynn‘s status on Facebook was quoted saying.

Her status was posted on Friday, November 18, 2011 and was immediately deleted by Nicole Lynn after it got her attention and denied the allegation. According to Nicole on her YouTube video on that same day, someone hacked her Facebook account and had been posting comments as her.

Filipino Grandmaster (GM) candidate Rolando Nolte defeated fellow International Master (IM) Srinath Narayanan of India in the 11th and final round of the Vizag GM International Open Chess Championships in India.

Nolte finished in a tie for sixth to tenth place in the tournament.

Nolte tallied 8 points on 6 wins, 1 loss and 4 draws in a five-way tie for sixth. He earned ninth place honors with a lower tie break points against sixth-placer GM Zaven Andriasian of Armenia, seventh-placer IM Sahaj Gover, eighth-placer IM Sunder Shyam and edged tenth-placer GM Arun Prasad of India.

One-hundred fifty chessers participated in the event, including Filipino GM Richard Bitoon, who finished in 48th-62nd place with 6.5 points. Bitoon drew his final match against IM Sudhakar Babu N of India.

Overnight solo leader GM Abhijeet Gupta of India, meanwhile, was yielded to GM Tigran Petrosian of Armenia in the final round. But Gupta still emerged as champion thanks to higher tie break points.

The LA Galaxy vs Azkals exhibition game on Saturday, December 03, 2011, which was dubbed as the “The Dream Cup”, was won by the Galaxy, 6-1.

As shown live at ABS-CBN’s Studio 23 that night, the LA Galaxy, with the world-famous David Beckham, won over the Philippine Azkals on their exhibition game held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

Apparently, thousands of Filipinos watched the LA Galaxy vs Azkals not only to support the Philippine football team but also to witness the American football players in action, particularly David Beckham.

The LA Galaxy started with their key players including Omar Gonzales, Sean Franklin, Frankie Hejduk, Chris Birchall, Landon Donovan, Josh Saunders, Robbie Keane, Mike Magee, AJ DelaGarza, Bryan Jordan and vice captain, David Beckham.

On the other hand, the Philippine Azkals, which is being dubbed as the underdog, has its first 11 players, which includes Rob Gier, Anton del Rosario, James Younghusband, Manny Ott, Angel Guirado, Chieffy Caligdong, Chris Greatwich, Ed Sacapano, Jason Sabio, Ray Jonsson, and Phil Younghusband.

For the first half, the LA Galaxy took the lead at 2-1, with David Beckham scoring a wonderful shot during the 20th minute and was followed by Mike Magee in the 38th minute.

Meanwhile, Azkals striker Phil Younghusband escaped from AJ DeLaGarza and made a goal in the 41st minute, for the first score for the local team.

For the second half, the Azkals failed to make a goal while the LA Galaxy scored 4 goals from three of their players, with one of them successfully finished two goals, and winning the friendly game, 6-1.

Robbie Keane made a goal in the 47th minute, while Adam Cristman scored in the 62nd and 87th minute. Greg Belhalter scored on a penalty kick after drawing a foul from the Azkals‘ Anton del Rosario in the 81st minute.

After the game, David Beckham, who played for 76 minutes, thanked the Filipinos for giving the entire team a warm welcome. He took off his jersey and handed it over to Manny Pacquiao, whom he admitted being a huge fan.

Over Three Million Filipino Coins To Break An American Record

Despite the uncooperative weather and coin shortage, the Philippines managed to lay down 73.02 kilometers of 25-centavo coins, breaking the Guinness World Record on the longest line of coins held by the US.

Dr. Greg Suarez II, president of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Officers’ Club said the volunteers of “Mahalaga Ako – Barya ng mga Bayani: The Power of Small Change Campaign” group managed to lay down over 73 kilometers of 25-centavo coins at the Quirino Grandstand along Roxas Boulevard in Manila, possibly beating the existing Guinness world record of 64.88 kilometers held by a community of Fort Scott in Kansas on June 12, 2008 that was completed only in six hours.

Suarez said the official measurement is still being verified and would be submitted to Guinness within the next few days.

He added the strong rains disrupted the activity and derailed the pattern of the coins. – With Perseus Echeminada

Montero said volunteers had to check anew the coins that were laid down last Tuesday because of the strong downpour.

He explained the organizers had to make sure that the coins were properly laid before these are documented and submitted to Guinness.

Montero said the organizers originally were targeting at least 70 kilometers but they experienced shortage of coins.

He said volunteers had to stop and rest Wednesday evening as there were no coins to lay down.

During the laying down of coins, Montero explained the organizers were short by 250,000 25-centavo coins to meet the 70-kilometer target.

The shortage was addressed with the arrival of more coins. The laying down of coins was supposed to be completed by 8 a.m. yesterday but was extended until evening due to the strong rains.

The organizers intend to raise at least 3.5 million 25-centavo coins to cover at least 70 kilometers to break the existing Guinness Record. One kilometer needs at least P12,500 worth of 25-centavo coins.

The record held by the US consisted of more than three million one-cent coins.

The previous record of 55.63 km had been set in Malaysia in 1995.

The project aims to unify Filipinos through the “Bayanihan” effort of breaking a world record and to unleash the power of small change by enlisting and involving as many Filipinos as possible to do small acts of heroism in the collection and donation of “barya” (loose change) as their modest contribution to nation building.

Charice Pempengco is no ordinary teenager. Dubbed by Oprah Winfrey as “ the most talented girl in the world,” her voice has stunned audiences around the world and has taken her from talent shows in the Philippines to appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show in the United States to having a part on the hit TV show, ‘Glee.’ In 2010 Charice also became the first Asian singer in history to rank in the Top 10 of the “Billboard 200” albums chart in 2010. This week Talk Asia sits down with the rising star to talk about her meteoric rise to success.

Below are the excerpts from the interview.

ON HER HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
ANNA COREN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: You came from humble beginnings, growing up in the Philippines. Tell me what that was like?

CHARICE PEMPENGCO, SINGER: Well it was really a tough life, not really easy. My mom’s a single mom and she used to be my vocal coach and I really admire her. She’s definitely my inspiration and I look up to her a lot. I mean I decided to be a singer because of her. It was a tough life before but now this whole thing that happened to me really helped me a lot.
COREN: Your father left when you were 3 years old. What are your memories of that time and how did it affect your family?
PEMPENGCO: I told my mom to stop working because it was really hard. By the age of six I was cooking rice and some stuff for my little brother. I was giving him the milk and everything…Every time I did all the singing contests and it was horrible. You start from 10pm in the night and you finish at 7am in the morning and I had to go to school. She used to cry and she told me to stop and I said “no” because that was the only way we could get a lot of money from it. I really sacrificed everything but at the same time it felt great and it was worth it. Seeing my mom’s face every time I won made me feel great…

ON HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER LATE FATHER

COREN: Do you miss [your father]?
PEMPENGCO: I actually don’t know. I don’t know. Maybe sometimes when I see some kids with their families. Sorry I keep crying. Maybe when I ask them sometimes, how does it feel to have a dad? (crying) And you know they tell me these great answers and sometimes I wish my dad is here. Maybe I do, sometimes. But at the same time, I don’t because of what happened. It’s hard. It’s really hard.

ON HER RISE TO FAME
ANNA COREN: Four years ago, you were a young singer in the Philippines whose performances were posted on YouTube, now you are this international star who has someone like Oprah as a mentor. Do you sometimes just wake up and think “wow this is my life”?
PEMPENGCO: Yes. Yes I still get overwhelmed. It happened so fast but at the same time, I worked hard for it and I’m still working hard for it.
COREN: How has this fame and this exclusive club that you have entered, how has this changed your life?
PEMPENGCO: For me, I’m still me. But of course my life has changed a lot. From the hard life, from a really tough life and now I actually gave stuff that I really wanted to give to my mom.
COREN: I have to ask you, there was a reported rivalry between you and [actress] Lea Michelle and that you had signed on to do five episodes [of ‘Glee’] but in actual fact you only appeared in three. Is this rivalry true?
PEMPENGCO: When I was there, she was nice to me so I don’t think there’s a rivalry but maybe people think that because I play her rival on Glee so there’s always going to be like that. So people will ask me if it’s like that in real life – I’m like no!

Pasig River Run is Largest Footrace this Year with More than 80,000 Runners

A total of 86,547 runners showed up and participated in the Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP)’s “11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River” Sunday (Nov 20), making it the largest single racing event in the country this year.

According to ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. (AFI)’s chief strategic officer Monchet Olives, the turnout in the advocacy run was five times bigger than the 16,000 participants at another run this year organized by a pharmaceutical company.

He said over 120,000 people registered and paid the fees including slots that were sponsored. The figure was higher than last year’s “10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River” that broke the Guinness World record for the largest number of participants in a racing event, with 116,000 runners.

He also stressed that the organizers “focused on the experience” this year as they arranged a festive setting for this year’s runners with bands from different universities, the military, and the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

“We closed down both sides of the Roxas Boulevard. That’s never been done before,” he said.

AFI managing director Gina Lopez, meanwhile, said that the contingents from schools, government agencies, the police and military, non-government organizations, business sector, and private institutions that composed the massive crowd only proved that they want a cleaner Pasig River for the future generation.

“It shows who we are as a people. The numbers don’t matter, there’s no doubt about it. Students came here. The army and the police were here. The private sector was here in full force,” said Lopez.

The charity 21K race organized by the network’s Cable Channels and Print Media Group was participated by KBPIP sponsors and partners, together with the country’s top businessmen and executives such as ABS-CBN Corporation chairman and CEO Eugenio Lopez III and Ayala Corporation president Fernando Zobel de Ayala and heartthrob Piolo Pascual.

The participants raced around Metro Manila and ran past the Estero de Paco where last year’s rehabilitation of Pasig River was made.

At the post-race program, Gina Lopez led the heads and representatives from government and private sectors in the river warrior dance as a sign of commitment to clean the river.
Meanwhile, Olives revealed that this year’s run had a good online registration turnout with 14,000 paid registrants.

He also disclosed that they are already planning to take on the historic EDSA in 2012.
“We’re going to play heavy on kids next year. If you get them to join, you also draw their parents,” he added.

The KBPIP’s strategy is to clean up the esteros that drain into the Pasig River. In 2010, the KBPIP organized the world-record breaking 10.10.10 run to raise consciousness for the rehabilitation of the river and its tributaries, particularly the rehabilitation of Estero de Paco, a 2.9-kilometer tributary of the Pasig River in Manila.

Lopez said in order to successfully clean the entire river, they must first clean the water that goes into it, and change the way people look at the river through events such as the annual “Run for the Pasig River.”

Philippines Receives 7 Nominations from the 2011 Asian Television Awards

According to reports, WBO Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao will be honored by Mayor Carlisle and other officials, at the Aloha Stadium before the game between Fresno State’s Bulldogs and the University of Hawaii’s Warrior football team on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

The visit comes after Pacquiao’s victory against Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez last Saturday, November 12, 2011 in Las Vegas, in which Pacquiao won by majority decision to retain his WBO Welterweight championship title.

11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River

“Matanglawin” anchor Kuya Kim Atienza, singer-actress Karylle, and Pinoy Biggest Loser grand winner Larry Martin along with other Kapamilya stars are set to join thousands of Filipinos to break the Guinness World Record of last year’s eco-foot race in the “11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River” this Sunday (Nov 20).

“We are going to hit big numbers,” said Monchet Olives, the ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI)’s chief strategic officer.

Larry will run the 10K race, while Pinoy Biggest Loser contestants Angela Lupango, Hazel Chua, Raffy Tan, Art Mendoza, Andy Gomez de Liano, Leigh Villegas, Joy Siy, and Eboy Bautista are going for 5K.

“We’re asking people to go out and be healthy on that day,” said Eric Imperio, the 11.20.2011’s overall race director.

AFI managing director Gina Lopez will also join the fun run, which aims to raise funds for the initial rehabilitation of Estero de San Miguel as part of the seven-year program to clean up the Pasig River.

The Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig’s strategy is to clean up the esteros that drain into the Pasig River. In 2010, the KBPIP organized the world-record breaking 10.10.10 run to raise consciousness for the rehabilitation of the river and its tributaries, particularly the rehabilitation of Estero de Paco, a 2.9-kilometer tributary of the Pasig River in Manila.

Lopez will join other business executives in the charity run, namely ABS-CBN Corporation president Eugenio Lopez III, Ayala Corporation president Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Alaska Milk Corporation president Fred Uytengsu and ABS-CBN Cable Channels and Print Media Group head Ernie Lopez who will all participate in the 21K charity run.

Surprise appearances by other Kapamilya stars await the running enthusiasts for the pre- and post-race programs.

Aside from actually running on the event day, other Kapamilya celebrities such as Anne Curtis, Jodi Sta. Maria, Ces Drilon and TJ Manotoc have helped the “11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River” by retweeting @run4pasigriver announcements.

Meanwhile, the advocacy run’s organizers have decided to abandon the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) to count the number of runners because of cost and reliability concerns. Instead, an independent auditing firm SyCip, Gorres & Velayo (SGV) will be managing 360 counters stationed on chutes near the finish line.

To accommodate all the expected runners on the race day, the SM Mall of Asia will be open for 48 hours from Saturday to Sunday (Nov 19 to Nov 20).

Compared to last year’s run, this year’s assembly time will start earlier at 3 am, while the 3K, 5K, and 10K races will start at exactly 4:45 am to regain normal traffic on Roxas Boulevard by 8 am.

Martin Aguda, head of ABS-CBN Safety and overall head of security and safety for the 11.20.2011 run, advised non-participants to avoid the race routes because heavy traffic is expected.

The “11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River” has 3K, 5K and 10K categories. The registration fees are P300 for 3K and 5K and P450 for 10K. Students can pay P150 for their registration fees for 3K and 5K if they present their valid identification cards.

The monumental 10.10.10 fun run last year broke the Guinness World record of 110,000 previously held by the 1988 “Bay to Breakers” race in San Francisco, USA. KBPIP used the P12 million raised for the cleaning operations on the esteros behind the Malacañang Palace, which flow into the Pasig River.

Philippine Azkals Under-23 team lost to Myanmar in the ongoing 26th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) men’s football on Sunday.

Myanmar demolished the Azkals Jr. with a score of 5 to 0.
Although the Junior Azkals won in their match against Laos, their loses against Timor Leste, Vietnam and now from Myanmar definitely hurt their chance to advance to the medal rounds.

Pagunsan admitted he was staggered by the turnaround, which now puts him in pole position to become the season's top earner with only three eligible events left on this year's Asian Tour.

"It surprises me because I am on top now -- I almost lost my card this year," Pagunsan said.

"It is a surprise. I will play the rest of the events in Asia. I want to get the Order of Merit (title). I really want to get that. It is a big achievement for my life."

Manny Pacquiao shattered all doubts and proved that he is the stronger fighter by defeating Juan Manuel Marquez for the second time.

Although Pacquiao has been on the receiving end of many combinations and punches from Marquez during the middle rounds, our Pambansang Kamao was still able to showcase his signature speed and landing a variety of counter-punches to the Mexican boxing champion.

Aureaus Solito’s “Busong” won the Emile Cantillon For Tomorrow’s Cinema Award (Prix Du Cinema de Demain: Prix Emile Cantillon)for International Competition in the recent 38th Brussels International Film Festival (BIFF).

Although proud of his film, Solito admitted that the award came as a big surprise . Jurors considered Busong as the film of the future as it promises innovation in the movie industry.

“Nagagalak ako dahil nanalo ako ng Cinema of the Future Award dahil mahalaga na nakita nila na ang aking paggawa ng pelikula ay nauuna sa panahon so it’s the future of the cinema award. Masaya ako na may ganitong award. Salamat," Solito said.

The film tackles the indigenous concept of "busong" which mean karma or fate. It maps the journey of Angkarang (Rodrigo Santikan), who carries his sister Punay (Alessandra de Rossi) in a hammock to find a cure for the running sores that cover her body. On their way, different people help her, though they themselves are on some kind of quest.

Azkals Will Compete in 26th SEA Games

The Azkals fever lives on, as its U-23 team—whose members are all under 23 years old—gears up for the much-awaited 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Indonesia.

Number “23” seems to be the lucky number for the followers of Azkals U-23, as Studio 23 will be the only SEA Games carrier in the Philippines to air all the football matches live.

After the action-packed initial game with group powerhouse Vietnam, the Azkals team will go against SEA Games’ youngest member Timor Leste on November 7, Monday at 4:30p.m.

For this preliminary bout, the Azkals have a good chance of winning, as Timor Leste’s football team has not achieved any international milestones yet since its debut in the AFC Cup in 2004. The team also tried competing in the ASEAN Football Federation Championship in 2004 as an invited member, but it finished last place—an implication that the team still has a long way to go before they can penetrate a more prestigious arena.

Filipino conjoined twins Angelica and Angelina Sabuco were separated successfully in the US on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, as shown in the news video below.

As noted at US news sites on Wednesday, the Pinay conjoined twins have been separated successfully at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Stanford University, California after nine hours of operation.

“This is a dream come true. I thank God for everything; words cannot express how the family feels for the successful separation of our twins, Angelica and Angelina.” Ginady, the Sabuco twins‘ mother, was told reporters.

“On behalf of my family, we thank Dr. Hartman and the team, all the nurses and the staff of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, and the media.” Ginady Sabuco added, whose twins were born in the Philippines in August 2009 but the family moved to the US last year.

According to reports, the operation involved a medical team headed by Dr. Gary Hartman, whose members include about 20 physicians and more than 15 operating room staff.

“The long-term prognosis is that we should have a happy, healthy set of girls. We don’t see any barrier to a full recovery,” Dr. Hartman said on the press conference.

The 2-year old conjoined twins were being joined at the chest and abdomen. Their livers, diaphragms, breast bones, chest and abdominal wall muscles were all fused; but have separate hearts, brains, kidneys, stomachs and intestines.

Based on medical history, most conjoined twins reportedly do not survive pregnancy and was said to have an overall survival rate is approximately 25 percent. The occurrence of conjoined twins is being estimated to be between 1 in 50,000 births and 1 in 100,000 births worldwide.

Meanwhile, the Sabuco sisters are now on their way to recovery and will be staying in the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) for a week and being expected to stay for another week in the hospital for further recovery.

Filipino American Jessica Cox, the world’s first licensed armless pilot, received praise from Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Binay said Cox, who paid a courtesy call on his office Thursday, exemplifies the Filipinos' perseverance in the face of hardship and their ability to rise above challenges.

Cox is currently in the country to meet her family and relatives, as she enjoys her vacation.

Born without arms in Tucson, Arizona, Cox is living her life to the fullest.
Aside from being a licensed pilot, Cox also drives her own car and is a certified scuba diver. She later learned to surf while she was in Hawaii

As a motivational speaker, Cox travels across the US to tell her story. She already met US President Barack Obama at the White House on the anniversary of the American Disabilities Act in July last year.
Cox entered the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first armless pilot in the world. She offered her medal to Pope Benedict XVI when she met his Holiness in the Vatican early this year.

UST Singers Hold Successful Concert in Madrid

The Philippine Embassy in Madrid reported that the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Singers held a successful concert at the Basilica Parroquia de la Virgen de la Milagrosa in Madrid last October 2.

The group performed before an estimated audience of approximately 500 persons, composed of members of the diplomatic corps, clergy, and members of the Filipino community and the Spanish public.

According to the choir´s director Fidel G. Calalang, the concert in Madrid has so far attracted the most number of persons in attendance for this year´s edition of their European Concert Tour.

But due to the critical situation that Thailand is facing in its capital Bangkok, the Miss Earth 2011 pageant has been moved to Manila, Philippines, where it originated 11 years ago.

Carousel Productions has released a statement regarding the sudden change of venue for the Miss Earth 2011 pageant:

“We have tried to remain optimistic about the situation in Thailand but day after day, the flood continues to engulf more portions of the country including its capital, Bangkok, where Miss Earth 2011 is scheduled to be held. Factories are shutting down and millions have been displaced from their work and homes. We understand and sympathize with the unfortunate and difficult situation Bangkok is undergoing especially after the Thai government recently declared indefinite holidays for everyone’s safety. Thai officials estimate it might take 4-6 weeks for the floods to recede and recovery could take months, if not years.

To continue to hold Miss Earth in Bangkok would be very insensitive and irresponsible on our part. Accordingly, we have decided to change the venue of Miss Earth 2011 from Bangkok, Thailand to where it all started: the Philippines. We are at this very moment planning and lining up meaningful activities for you that will be true to our mission as beauties for a cause. In our workshops, we shall discuss these natural calamities and what we can do to control their effects on our respective countries.”

Next year, Miss Earth is slated to be hosted for the second time by Vietnam.

The United Nation (UN) declared Danica May Camacho as the world’s 7 billionth baby, who was born in the Philippines on Sunday, October 30, 2011.

As shown in local TV news on Monday, Danica May Camacho, who was born at Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila, at 11:58 p.m. (local time) on Sunday, is the 7-billionth baby, as declared by the UN.

I'm wondering why they didn't give her name like "Seven", or "Billy" or "7B", which Filipinos are known for giving name that follows the significance! :)

According to reports, a UN representative visited the said hospital and brought along a gift certificate for free shoes for Danica, along with a cake marked “7B Philippines“, celebrating her symbolic birth for the world.

Danica‘s parents are Camille Dalura and Florante Camacho, a jeepney driver, with Camille telling reporters that she did not expect her second delivery will be so special.

“She looks so lovely. I can’t believe she is the world’s seven billionth.” Camille was quoted as saying. Danica weighs 5.5 pounds when delivered and about a month premature.

The family also received other gifts for Danica from well-wishers, including a college scholarship and some money. Press people and some politicians were also present when UN officials came.

As reported earlier, UN named October 31, 2011 as “Seven Billion Day“, which aims to draw attention to the challenges of the world’s growing population, estimating that the world population would reach 7 billion that day.

On the other hand, a UK-based non-profit organization called Plan claims that a baby girl named Nargis, is the world’s 7-billionth baby, who was born on Monday in India, where celebration also took place.

Based on UN demographics, China still has the largest population in the world, having 1.34 billion people. India is second, with a population of 1.2 billion. The Philippines has an estimated population of 94.9 million. The world population is being predicted to reach 10 billion by 2100.

Pinoy Artists To Mount 'Art Trek' Exhibit in Singapore

Filipino artists in Singapore, including avant-garde icon David Cortez Medalla, will hold a "Philippine Art Trek" exhibit in Singapore in November, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

The Philippine Embassy in Singapore said "Art Trek V" includes a month-long series of performance art, lectures, and exhibitions of works by established and emerging Filipino artists in Singapore's top galleries.

"Art Trek has showcased the works of more than 150 Filipino artists in Singapore since 2007, helping to deepen the cultural interaction and friendship between the two countries," a report on the DFA website said.

"It has been able to do this through the support of the Embassy's partners, including, this year, the Lee Foundation, Credit Suisse, Keppel Corporation, Bank of Singapore, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, and Airphil Express," it said.

Since it started in 2007, Art Trek V has earned a spot in Singapore's annual arts calendar as the centerpiece of the Embassy's cultural diplomacy program.

This year, the Embassy partnered with the National University of Singapore (NUS) Museum for the anchor event of Art Trek V, entitled "Sites of Practice-Filipino Performance Art Abroad."

Damarillo has started all of his four cloud computing companies in Cebu before he brings them to the U.S. Through cloud computing, Damarillo creates technologies that maximize the power of multiple computers without having to add extra parts or use extra energy. He believes the Philippines could be a leader in cloud computing. “This technology is not just to further business, it can help developing countries, in our schools in our health care in our local government and our budding entrepreneurs that is so required in the country so we can improve ourselves out of the economic situation that we are in right now,” he explained.

As he has climbed to the top of the technology world, he’s also giving back through the PhilDev Foundation a project with another Filipino technology giant Dado Banatao. Their current project involves working with Fil-Am scholars to use technology to bring cost efficient energy to the Philippines.

She is one of the best ballroom dancers in the world, having danced her way to people hearts as a two-time Dancing With The Stars champion and a fitness expert with her series of exercise videos, but for 27-year old Cheryl Burke, her passion for is shared with aspiring dancers through her dance studios in Mountain View and Laguna Niguel, California.

Burke grew up in Atherton, California. Her father is of Irish and Russian descent and her mother is Filipino. Her family dances for recreation and has a dance floor at home. At age four, she began taking ballet lessons and performing locally. She then began ballroom dancing and decided to change her focus. She trained in both standard ballroom and Latin dances. She began competing at age 13. Cheryl attended Menlo-Atherton High School, graduated in 2002. In fall of 2007 Cheryl was awarded the key to the city from the mayor of Atherton at her old high school.

“Dancing is a great way to exercise. Opening dance studios is just a way for me to promote that dancing is also a great way to keep in shape and stay healthy,” said Burke.

Burke understands that as a celebrity, she is also a role model.

She shared the triumphs and trials of her life in her autobiography titled Dancing Lessons, where she wrote about a dark period in her life: a victim of domestic violence.

“I finally came to terms with everything. And it was important for me to speak out about it and there is a reason why I have been blessed to be able to talk about the abuse,” said Burke.

Lending her voice and work to survivors, she was honored with a Voice Over Violence Award by a national non-profit organization helping to stop domestic violence and abuse.

Judge Lilian Lim: Filipino-American Judge in the United States

What else Filipinos cannot do? We're known for being hardworking workers! We're known for knocking-out all Mexican boxers! We're known for having so many talented people that anyone can upload their own videos and showing-off the great talent. Now, even the judiciary will be conquered.

The first Filipino-American judge in the United States, Judge Lillian Lim is what some may consider a pint-size powerhouse.

Standing at 4 feet 11 inches, she said that she can be considered a tiny champion.

She graduated from Brown University with honors and cum laude in law from Western State College.
In 2007, she was the commencement speaker for Thomas Jefferson School of Law where she received an honorary doctorate. She was also awarded Outstanding Jurist of 2007 by the San Diego County Bar Association.

“Here in San Diego, we have one of the greatest concentrations of Filipinos in the country. Typically on my jury panels I would have one or two Filipino-Americans. They come into the courtroom, I always say, ‘You know I’m Filipino too,’” said Lim.

Lim was the first of her family born in the U.S. She never forgets her heritage, or the moment her family received news of her judge appointment.

“My appointment was because I was fortunate, I had background as a state prosecutor, I was a woman of color, I was a Filipina,” explained Lim.

Married to another judge, Lim said her marriage is quite unique.

“We certainly can talk to each other about the law, so that’s good. We can share some of the burdens and sadness that come into court, so we can share that with each other. We can have a little competition about who’s right and who’s wrong on certain legal principles,” said Lim.

For trailblazing in the field of law and criminal justice, Judge Lillian Lim is a Filipino Champion, Pilipinong maipagmamalaki.

The 11 year old YouTube star signed a contract with Star Records. After her fame when she sang Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” on YouTube, she is set to sing the Philippine National Anthem for the upcoming “Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez” bout.

You’ll hear songs like ‘Born This Way’ and ‘Kung Bubuksan Mo Lang ang Puso,’ at her ABS CBN shows.

She is a Pinoy Pride because Lady Gaga talked to her on the phone and invited her to appear in her concert in Toronto after being seen in YouTube. Maria performed ‘Born This Way’ in Lady Gaga’s concert while she (Maria) played the piano. Maria even sat on Lady Gaga’s lap.

Aside from Lady Gaga, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is also her fan, Maria performed Canada’s national anthem before Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton during Canada Day. Apparently, Maria cannot speak Filipino fluently but she has a message to Filipino fans. “Mabuhay sa inyong lahat. Gusto ko sabihin na salamat sa lahat ng sumuporta sa akin. Grateful ako na andito ako.”

Maria and her family are great boxing fans. “I know it by heart but we still need to practice to get it perfect and ready for the fight and so that my tagalog sounds better!”
Thats why Maria promised her family assurance of front row seats for the “Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez” bout.

She also wishes to have a duet with People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao.
“He’s a pretty good singer too and I’d really get a chance to sing with him maybe,” Maria giggles.

Check out this cute animated short film entitled "Fight for the Moon," which features Philippine heroes Jose Rizal and Juan Luna who were turned fighters in an arcade game.

The video was created by the Creative Media & Film Society of the Philippines (CreaM) which is being spearheaded by Governor Imee Marcos. Reggie Lee: Hollywood Actor Proud To Be Pinoy

I remember him -- He played an agent in Prison Break back in 2006. But because he really looked like Chinese, I didn't bother to look onto his profile nor wonder if he's a Filipino. But fortunately, he was born in the Philippines and always proud to be Pinoy!

Hollywood's Asian everyman is proudly Pinoy. For the past 15 years, Philippine-born actor Reggie Lee is the go-to character actor for many Asian roles in Hollywood movies and TV shows.

When he started in Hollywood 15 years ago, Lee was happy to get small roles every once in a while.

These days, he's working non-stop.

In the fall, he will be appearing as one the stars of NBC’s highly anticipated supernatural TV show "Grimm."

"One of my friends texted me the other day and said, 'You know, if you go on IMDB, you have more credits than Tom Cruise.' Yes, but Tom Cruise's movies are huge," said Lee.

Lee appeared with Cruise in one of his hits, "Tropic Thunder".

The Fil-Am actor was also in not just one but two "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.

He was also good in his multiple-episode villain role in "Prison Break" that to this day, fans of the show still come up to him to tell him what they think of his evil character.

"I've been fortunate to be able to play a whole variety of roles. I've even played roles that my name... there's no Asian to be found in it. For 'Drag Me to Hell' I was Stu Rubin," he said.

Lee has played seemingly every Asian role in Hollywood: Korean, Chinese, and even Burmese in his recent guest star part in the new hit show "White Collar.”

But he has never had the chance to play a Filipino until "Here Comes the Boom" came along.

The movie, set to come out in 2012, stars Kevin James and Salma Hayek, and in it he plays the dad of international singing sensation Charice.

"She's unbelievably lovely. She's a tough girl. I always think of her as still being young. 'Po' ng 'po'. I told her, 'You don't have to say that to me. I feel really old if you keep doing that.' But she said it's just how she grew up," he related.

From Quezon City, Lee's family immigrated to the United States when he was 6 years old.

Fil-Am Duo ‘Brewer Boys’ Makes it to ‘X-Factor USA’ Top 17

Ellona Santiago is not the only Filipino-American who made the cut in “The X Factor USA.”

Apparently, Young duo Justin and Nathan Brewer, also known as, the Brewer Boys, also have Pinoy blood!

The Brewer Boys is one of the four groups who made it to the live shows and they are being mentored by Paula Abdul. The duo is vying against 16 other finalists for the $5 million prize.

Nonito Donaire Jr. Wins Via Unanimous Decision

Nonito Donaire Jr. has beaten his Argentinian opponent Omar Narvaez via unanimous decision on Saturday, October 22 (Sunday morning, Manila time) at the Madison Square Garden, New York.

With the win, Nonito Donaire Jr. successfully defended his World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight belts against Omar “El Huracan” Narvaez. The Filipino Flash, however, did not get the knockout victory he was hoping for because Narvaez clammed up during the middle rounds.

All the three judges eventually voted in favor of Donaire, 120-108.
The Filipino boxer now holds a record of 27 wins, 1 loss and 18 knockouts while Narvaez suffered the first loss of his career. His record now stands at 35 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws.

In an interview by ESPN, Donaire apologized to the crowd for lack of action during the bout because Narvaez clammed up.

“I did my best. I was very frustrated. I’m sorry it didn’t come out the way we wanted. I wanted him to open up. He had his hands up. Now I know how Pacquiao felt with Clottey.” he said.

David Beckham and His Team LA Galaxy to Play Against the Philippine Azkals

David Beckham is reportedly coming in the Philippines together with his team LA Galaxy to play against the Philippine national football team, the Philippine Azkals, this December.

The news came from Azkals team coordinator and media liaison Patrick Ace Bright via his Twitter account. He said that the LA Galaxy vs Philippine Azkals friendly match will be held on December 4, 2011 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

The friendly match is part of LA Galaxy’s promotional tour in Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines.

The team is also scheduled to visit Melbourne, Australia on December 6th.

The University of the Philippines made it to the Top 400 of the World’s Best Universities list for 2011.

U.S. News & World Report has released the new ranking of the Top 400 best colleges in the world based on Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Faculty-Student Ratio, International Faculty, International Students, and Citations per Faculty.

Two Philippine schools made it to the Top 400.

With a score of 34.4, the University of the Philippines ranks 332nd in the world and 62nd in Asia.

The second of only two Philippine schools in the list is Ateneo de Manila University which ranks 360th in the world and 65th in Asia. Ateneo received a total score of 32.
The highest ranking Asian school is Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) which garnered a perfect score of 100.
The world’s no.1 university, on the other hand, is University of Cambridge of the United Kingdom. The British school bested USA’s Harvard University which settled for no. 2.

Kris Aquino is Now a UNHCR Honorary Patron

Kris Aquino, the Queen of All Media and sister of Philippine President Noynoy Aquino, has accepted the offer of the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) for her to become an honorary patron.

Kris Aquino announced this news via her Twitter account.

“Just finished UNHCR dinner. I accepted their appointment.”
The appointment, according to reports, is the first step to becoming an ambassador of goodwill just like Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie.

By accepting the offer, Kris now belongs to an elite group of world famous personalities having the honor of being one of the four honorary patrons and one goodwill ambassador (Angelina Jolie) in the world.

“I’m honorary patron together with Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls, Khaled Hosseini, author of A Thousand Splendid Suns and Kite Runner, and Yao Chen from China,” the Queen of All Media said.

The UNHCR is a United Nations agency mandated to protect and support refugees at the request of a government or the UN itself and assists in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland and is a member of the United Nations Development Group.

Established on December 14, 1950, its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees.
